At Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic, we understand that your pet isn’t simply a companion but a beloved and important family member, and, as a family member, they deserve a veterinary care team you can trust. You want a veterinarian who answers your questions—large or small—with patience and kindness, celebrates your pet’s little victories, and works tirelessly on their behalf when they are in need.

Such a trusting relationship begins with knowing who cares for your pet. Our one-on-one interview introduces you to our newest associate, Emily Davison Baker, DVM.

Question: Where are you originally from, Dr. Baker?
Answer: I was born in Hartford, CT, and grew up in Charlottesville, VA.

Q: How and when did you decide you wanted to be a veterinarian?

A: I have wanted to be a veterinarian for as long as I can remember. At 3 years old, my dad made me my first pair of scrubs and gave me a stethoscope that I would use to do physical exams on my stuffed animals.

Q: How did you land at Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic?

A: We recently moved to Summerville for my husband’s job. When I started looking for a job, I heard great reviews about Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic. I am also excited to be joining a Fear Free clinic.

Q: What’s your favorite part about being a veterinarian?

A: My favorite part is the relationships formed between the veterinary team and the owners and pets and the impact we can have on our community.

Q: Can you tell us about your pets?

A: I have a 7.5-year-old German shorthaired pointer named Beamer, who was named after the old Virginia Tech football coach, Frank Beamer, and a 7-year-old golden retriever named Oakley.

Q: Can you tell us about your human family?

A: I married my high school sweetheart, Maury, whom I have known since preschool. Together we have a 6-month-old son named Davison, my maiden name. We mostly call him Roo, which is short for his middle name, Rooney.

Q: What’s something about you that might surprise others?

A: Roo and I share the same birthday, March 24.

Q: What’s your favorite food?

A: Spaghetti or pizza. I love anything that contains carbohydrates and cheese.

Q:  What’s your biggest fear?

A: Alligators! I definitely am not used to the South Carolina wildlife yet.

Q: What’s your favorite hobby?

A: I’m not sure if this counts as a hobby, but I love to travel and explore new places.

Q: Would you prefer a spa weekend or a camping trip?

A: I would prefer a camping trip—as long as it is not near any alligators! I grew up near Shenandoah National Park and spent a lot of time there exploring the outdoors.

Q: Tell me a few things on your bucket list or something you’d like to accomplish in the next five years.

A: One thing would be to visit all seven continents!

Q: Do you have any unexpected talents?

A: Not really. I wish I did!

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share?

A: Simply that I am excited to join the team at Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic and help take care of pets in our community.
