Pet Dental Services in Summerville

Ensuring they live long and happy lives.

Dentistry for dogs and cats At Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic we believe there are three major factors in keeping dogs and cats healthy. The first is annual preventative care such as annual exams, vaccines, lab work and prevention. The second is good nutrition and the third is great dental care! We know that 80 to 90% of dogs and cats have some degree of periodontal disease by age 3!!! In order to prevent periodontal disease and the need for costly surgical dental extractions, we recommend starting annual professional dental cleanings at 1 year of age for most pets. This ultimately leads to a longer and healthier life for your furry friend!

What goes into a dental cleaning? A dental cleaning at Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic includes a pre-operative exam by the veterinarian and preoperative lab work to make sure your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. All dental procedures are done under full general anesthesia to ensure the mouth can be fully examined for any signs of disease or cancer. Every patient receives full mouth dental radiographs (x rays) to assess for painful dental disease that may be hiding below the gum line. After the mouth is fully assessed for signs of disease by one of our highly skilled veterinarians, the teeth are cleaned with ultrasonic scaling, subgingival curettage and polishing of the teeth. The procedure also includes a therapy laser treatment. This treatment can reduce inflammation, bacteria and pain in the oral cavity associated with periodontal disease. A keystone to healthier lives for your pet If oral surgery is needed to extract teeth and treat periodontal disease based on the initial assessment of your pet's mouth, a doctor or technician will call to discuss this with you. Some extractions can be done the same day and some need to be scheduled as a second procedure depending on how the patient is doing under anesthesia and how long the extractions will take. We take great pride in making sure your pet is pain free throughout the procedure with injectable pain medication and local anesthetics. They will also go home with pain medication to keep them comfortable after the procedure. Most pets do great after oral surgery and actually feel better once the painful dental disease is addressed!
